The cost of drug abuse in America is estimated at more than $484 billion per year, says the National Institute on Drug Abuse. But the toll that addiction has on individuals and families is perhaps even greater than any damage measured in dollars and cents.

According to the the NIDA:
  • 31 percent of America's homeless suffer from drug abuse or alcoholism.
  • 50 to 80 percent of all child abuse and neglect cases substantiated by child protective services involve some degree of substance abuse by the child's parents.
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that drugs are used by approximately 10 to 22 percent of drivers involved in crashes, often in combination with alcohol.
  • At least half of the individuals arrested for major crimes including homicide, theft, and assault were under the influence of illicit drugs around the time of their arrest.
The NIDA, a part of the National Institutes of Health, which is a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, says drug addiction is “a complex but treatable brain disease.”

Volunteers of America is experienced in helping break the substance-abuse cycle that can tear families apart, ruin careers, and push those living life as an addict into hopelessness, through a variety of intervention, residential treatment and transitional housing programs.
